LOCATION: New York City (hybrid)
SALARY: $200,000 - $230,000 base salary + bonus
The Role:
Canoe is seeking a progressive, strategic, and people-first professional to serve as our first executive leader of People.
As a key member of Canoe’s senior leadership team, reporting to the CEO, you will play a pivotal role in the leadership and growth of the company as we continue to scale to maturity. In this role, you will oversee all People functions including Talent Acquisition and People Operations. You will partner closely with the CEO and the leadership team to elevate our global infrastructure, policies, and processes and ensure all people-related activities are executed seamlessly throughout the entire employee lifecycle.
The ideal candidate will have extensive experience managing People functions and a strong track record of building and managing an early-stage HR team. You must be highly adaptable as the organization grows and evolves, comfortably navigating the challenges of a fast-paced start-up environment. You have the ability to foster a high-performing company culture with a remote, distributed workforce.
What You’ll Do:
- Lead and drive Canoe’s top priorities with a constant focus on building a positive and high-performing culture, operational excellence, and overall employee engagement
- Develop Canoe’s People strategy across all areas of HR, serving as a subject matter expert on all aspects of People, including talent acquisition, talent management, benefits, compensation, HR systems and analytics, learning & development, performance management, diversity & inclusion, and employee engagement
- Be an advisor and business partner to the executive leadership team regarding all people matters to execute the Canoe growth vision
- Maximize the potential of our HR systems: evaluate, further develop, and implement new processes, platforms, and systems as needed
- Oversee all stages of the employee life-cycle processes and understand how they impact organizational performance
- Provide coaching and training to support managers in their day-to-day people activities to drive continuous up-leveling as leaders
- Ensure policies, procedures, and HR policies are consistently administered, aligned with organizational goals, and in compliance with professional standards, state and federal regulatory requirements, and laws
- Design people programs around company initiatives and improve key metrics in the areas of talent acquisition, retention and engagement
- Report to the Board on people practices and metrics as needed
What We’re Looking For:
- 10+ years of People related experience with broad exposure to numerous areas of People Operations, with at least 5+ years in a strategic leadership role
- Passion for scaling a high growth, fast-paced tech company from 100 to 300 employees
- Experience transitioning from a PEO to bringing functions in-house, while managing operations and compliance for multiple states
- Executive presence and comfort leading conversations with C-Level executives, Board of Directors, and Compensation Committees
- Exceptional leadership skills; high emotional intelligence, communication, collaboration, and listening skills: you understand how to galvanize and inspire a team to tap into their highest potential
- A proven track record and ability to synthesize complex information into actionable strategies and navigate scaling company challenges like span of control, succession planning, and building a manager bench
- Ability to navigate sensitive issues and difficult conversations while gaining buy-in and making difficult decisions as needed
- Strong analytical skills, with expertise in translating qualitative and quantitative data into actionable improvements
- Familiarity with employment laws and regulations in the UK preferred
- SHRM/SPHR or equivalent Certification highly preferred
